The Pope has spoken, apparently climate change is a thing.
Climate change is no longer just something to discredit because it was cold whilst I ate my breakfast this morning, no, the Pope has intervened, calling on the richest nations to pay their debts to the poor for leaving the world on the brink of resembling a pit of filth. Strong words, maybe, but when big G has your back, you can pretty much say what you want. Just ask Moses.
The Internet has exploded over it, the usual too’s and fro’s of claim and counter claim. I am more interested in his re-imagining of the bible where he points to a more inclusive way of interacting with our ecosystem rather than the old view that big G supposedly gave us dominion over the animal kingdom. A source of words long used to justify animal cruelty from farming to hunting.
The big shame is that it takes a man in a white suit to tell us the world is wrong before people sit up enough to pay attention. We live in a world with simultaneous chronic hunger and obesity, if that alone isn’t enough to make you want to take action over the things that are wrong then we are lost.
Ultimately it’s not the planet that needs saving, it’s us, humans. We need the world more than it needs and contrary to popular belief, humanity is not the centre of the universe. Climate change has to be a purely selfish act for us as a species if we are to stand a chance of enduring. If not then it will truly become the planet of the apes.
Our current methods of farming, transportation, energy production, you name it, is antiquated and barely a step on from the industrial revolution. True progress has been stalled in the name of profit. We have a wide range of renewable energies at our disposal, nano science, wireless technology, hydroponics, vertical farming, I could go on but in short; our reach far exceeds our grasp, another world is possible, we just have to be daring enough to demand it. Our fate as a species depends on it. #savethehumans
